Time For Dentures? How To Care For Your Dentures And Your Gums

Posted on

If you've been diagnosed with an advanced stage of gum disease and you're not a good candidate for dental implants, it's time to prepare for your complete dentures. One of the benefits of complete dentures is that they don't require any surgical procedures, and they can be fitted for you in as little as a day. However, there are some things that you'll need to learn about your dentures. If you're not sure what to expect once you have your dentures, read the list provided below. Here are some tips that will help you care for your new dentures and for your gums.

Keep Your Dentures Adjusted

Dentures are designed to fit the shape of your mouth. That doesn't mean that your new dentures will fit perfectly the first time you wear them. When you receive your new dentures, your dentist will make some adjustments to the fit. The adjustments will help you avoid sore spots on your gums and will help to prevent slipping. However, those aren't the only adjustments your dentures will need. Each time you visit the dentist, they'll check your dentures for proper fit. If your dentures are too loose or too tight in a few places, the dentist will make the necessary adjustments.

Keep Your Dentures Clean

Once you have your dentures, you need to get in the habit of keeping them clean. You might think that soaking your dentures overnight will keep them clean and sanitary. However, that's not actually the case. To keep your dentures clean, sanitary and odour-free, you need to brush them at least twice a day, just as you do for your natural teeth. Soaking your dentures overnight will help to keep them moist, which is also important. Allowing your dentures to dry out can cause them to break.

Keep Your Gums Healthy

If you're ready to be fitted for your first set of complete dentures, now's the time to learn about proper gum health. You might not know this, but you need to take extra care of your gums once you're fitted for your dentures. First, make sure your dentures fit well to avoid sores. Second, see your dentist at the first sign of gum sores. Without proper care, your denture sores can get infected. Finally, give your gums a break at night. Without nightly breaks, your jaw can become weak, which can cause you to lose bone density.

Now that you're ready for dentures, use the steps provided here to learn about proper gum and denture care. For more information about complete dentures, contact a local dentist.
